Equilibrium Unemployment

چکیده
A search-theoretic model of equilibrium unemployment is constructed and shown to be consistent with the key regularities of the labor market and business cycle. The two distinguishing features of the model are: (i) the decision to accept or reject jobs is modeled explicitly, and (ii) markets are incomplete. The model is well suited to address a number of interesting policy questions. Two such applications are provided: the impact of unemployment insurance, and the welfare costs of business cycles. r 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classification: E24; E32

The General Equilibrium Impacts of Unemployment Insurance: Evidence from a Large Online Job Board1
During the Great Recession, U.S. unemployment benefits were extended by up to 73 weeks. Theory predicts that extensions increase unemployment by discouraging job search, a partial equilibrium effect. Using data from the large job board CareerBuilder.com, I find that a 10% increase in benefit duration decreased state‐level job applications by 1%, but had no robust effect on job va...

Equilibrium Unemployment with Outsourcing and Wage Solidarity Under Labour Market Imperfections We evaluate the effects of outsourcing and wage solidarity on wage formation and equilibrium unemployment in a heterogeneous labour market, where wages are determined by a monopoly labour union. We find that outsourcing promotes the wage dispersion between the high-skilled and low-skilled workers. Wh...

متن کاملA Dynamic Equilibrium Model of Inflation and Unemployment
A stochastic general equilibrium model is constructed which is capable of examining the covariance properties between inflation and unemployment, both conditioned and unconditioned upon the state of exogenous real and monetary factors. Indivisibilities introduced into agents' labor choice decisions produce unemployment in equilibrium. It is shown that indigenous forces in a competitive economy ...
متن کاملDuration Dependent UI Payments in a Model of Equilibrium Unemployment
A dynamically consistent model of equilibrium unemployment when UI payments are duration dependent is developed. The main market distortion is a moral hazard problem: the government does not observe job o¤ers. Hence, UI payments put unemployed workers in a better bargaining position which directly a¤ects equilibrium wage determination. Simulations ...nd that shortening the duration of UI paymen...
متن کاملTechnological unemployment: a discussion
The objective of this work is to provide a critical assessment of the basic methodology advanced in current macroeconomic theories to understand the relationship between technological progress and unemployment. The standard reference will be the so called natural unemployment schemes, that in what follows will be fully identified with equilibrium unemployment theories1. Our conviction is that u...
